Can a trailer caravan be driven on the road?

September-30th-2025

Currently, 90% of the most popular RVs in China are self-propelled. They are known for their comprehensive functionality, spaciousness, and ease of travel. However, they typically cost around 300,000 to 400,000 yuan, with entry-level pickup trucks also around 200,000 yuan. While you get what you pay for, I personally don't agree with the idea of spending around 200,000 yuan, and I'd rather not buy one. However, quality RVs do deter many enthusiasts. High maintenance costs and low usage rates contribute to the low number of RV buyers in China.

However, in foreign countries, on the contrary, 90% of them are trailer RVs, but they have never been recognized by everyone in China. This is mainly because many friends who want to choose a trailer RV are worried about being stopped by traffic police on the road and not being allowed to enter the highway. Is this true?

In fact, it won’t happen in real life. As long as your trailer RV is registered, there will be no problem. In fact, you really don’t have to worry. I towed the Little Raindrop RV to 7 provinces in China, and was only stopped by traffic police in Zhanjiang, Guangdong and Shandong. The Guangdong said that it was dangerous for my trailer RV to be on the road and it should have a license plate. Because I was a tourist from other places, they let me go because of the holidays; the traffic police in Shandong just asked a few questions, and because the trailer was not registered, they did not let me go on the highway and did not hold me responsible. I was quite fortunate. If there were serious police, they would have fined and confiscated my trailer. After all, I knew it.

Article 56:

(1) Trucks, semi-trailer tractors, and tractors are only allowed to tow one trailer. The trailer's lighting, signaling, braking, connection, safety protection, and other devices must comply with national standards;

(2) Small passenger cars are only allowed to tow caravan trailers or trailers with a total mass of less than 700 kg. Trailers are not allowed to carry passengers;

(3) The load capacity of a trailer towed by a truck shall not exceed the load capacity of the truck itself.

Road Traffic Safety Law

Article 11: When driving a motor vehicle on the road, a motor vehicle license plate must be displayed. In fact, Article 56 is not the reason why we do not display the license plate. The main reason is that the annual inspection of the license plate is too troublesome and it is used too rarely. Now there are indeed very few traffic police checks and there are also few penalties.

Article 103: Anyone who produces or sells a motor vehicle model without the permission of the national motor vehicle product regulatory department shall have the illegally produced and sold motor vehicle products and accessories confiscated, and may be fined not less than three times but not more than five times the value of the illegal products; if the person has a business license, the business license shall be revoked by the industrial and commercial administrative department; if the person does not have a business license, the business shall be sealed up.

There are still risks in driving without a license plate. It is suitable for people who are bold and not afraid of inspection. If you have already bought it, it is recommended not to enter the city. If you meet a traffic police, don't be serious and admit your mistake actively. If it is just a fine, just accept it. Remember to print out the license plate of the car in front of you, enlarge it and stick it on the rear of the trailer when you are on the road.

Therefore, trailer RVs can be driven on the road, so please feel free to buy them.
