Can towed caravans be driven on the road?

Currently, 90% of the most popular RVs in China are motorhomes, due to their comprehensive functions, large space, and convenient driving. However, their prices are generally around 300,000 to 400,000 yuan, with even entry-level pickup truck RVs costing around 200,000 yuan. In reality, you get what you pay for, and I personally disagree with the 200,000 yuan price point; it's better not to buy one at all. However, good RVs are indeed out of reach for many RV enthusiasts. High maintenance costs and low usage rates contribute to the low number of RV buyers in China.

However, the opposite is true abroad, where 90% of cars are towed caravans. In China, however, they have not been well-received. This is mainly because many people who want to choose a towed caravan are worried about being stopped by traffic police and not being allowed on the highway. Is this really the case?

In reality, this won't happen. As long as your travel trailer is registered, there won't be any problems. There's really no need to worry. I've traveled through seven provinces in China with my travel trailer, and I was only stopped by traffic police in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, and Shandong. In Guangdong, they said my travel trailer was dangerous on the road and should have a license plate, but considering it was a holiday and I was a tourist from out of town, they let me go. In Shandong, the traffic police just asked a few questions, and because the trailer wasn't registered, they didn't let me on the highway and didn't hold me responsible. I was quite lucky; a more serious police officer would have fined me and confiscated my trailer, since I knew that.

Article 56:

(i) Trucks, semi-trailer tractors, and tractors are only permitted to tow one trailer. The trailer's lights, signals, brakes, couplings, and safety devices must comply with national standards.

(ii) Small passenger vehicles are only permitted to tow recreational trailers or trailers with a total mass of 700 kg or less. Trailers are not allowed to carry passengers;

(iii) The load capacity of the trailer towed by the freight vehicle shall not exceed the load capacity of the freight vehicle itself.

Road Traffic Safety Law

Article 11 stipulates that motor vehicles driven on roads shall display license plates. In fact, Article 56 is not a reason for us not to register. The main reason is that the registration and annual inspection are too troublesome and are used too infrequently. Nowadays, traffic police rarely check and there are few penalties.

Article 103 Anyone who produces or sells a motor vehicle model without permission from the State Administration for Motor Vehicle Products shall have the illegally produced or sold finished motor vehicle and its parts confiscated, and may also be fined three to five times the value of the illegal products; if the vehicle has a business license, the administrative department for industry and commerce shall revoke its business license, and if the vehicle does not have a business license, it shall be sealed up.

Driving without a license plate carries risks and is suitable for those who are bold and unafraid of being checked. If you have already bought one, it is recommended not to enter the city. If you encounter traffic police, do not argue with them and take the initiative to admit your mistake. If it is just a fine, accept it. Remember to print out and enlarge the license plate of the vehicle in front of you and stick it on the back of the trailer when you drive on the road.

Therefore, towable caravans are legal to drive on the road, so please feel free to purchase them.
