This is a true story: Don't turn those who help you into your enemies!

In December 1964, our small team was prospecting for minerals in northwestern Yunnan. The team consisted of eight people, including four guards, each equipped with a submachine gun.

One day, before we set off, a fellow Naxi man hitched a ride with us to Weixi. The road was covered in heavy snow that day, and the surface was uneven and full of potholes; the car would frequently get stuck in the snow. We had to get out and push the car often.

Just as we got out of the car to push it again, a group of brownish-yellow things slowly approached us. As we were wondering and speculating, a Naxi villager shouted urgently, "Quick, quick, get back in the car! It's a pack of wolves!"

Driver Xiao Wang quickly started the car and stepped on the gas...

Unfortunately, the wheels just spun in place, unable to move forward. By then, the wolves had approached the car. Everyone could see them clearly-eight wolves, each as big as a calf, their bellies hanging high.

Soldier Xiao Wu picked up a submachine gun. The Naxi villager snatched the gun from Xiao Wu and calmly shouted, "Don't fire! If you fire, they'll either crawl under the car or into the woods. The wolves will bite the tires, surround us, and then howl to summon more wolves to fight us."

He continued, “The wolves are starving; they’re looking for food. Is there any food on the truck?” We answered almost in unison, “Yes.” “Then throw it down for them to eat,” the villager said, as if giving an order.

I had never experienced anything like this before. My mind went completely blank. Apart from being nervous, my brain seemed incapable of thinking. Hearing what the fellow villager said, we didn't hesitate and hurriedly threw down some of the cured meat, ham, and very precious dried deer meat we had bought in Lijiang.

The wolves' eyes turned red with excitement as they roared and pounced on their food, tearing and swallowing it greedily. The food they had just thrown down was gone in the blink of an eye.

The villager continued to command, "Throw some more down!" A second batch of about 50 pounds of meat flew out of the back door and was devoured by the eight wolves in the time it takes to smoke a pipe! After finishing, the eight wolves sat down neatly, staring at the back door.

At that moment, we all held our breath, our palms were sweating with tension, and we could even clearly hear our own heartbeats! We didn't know what way we could break out of the wolf pack.

Seeing this, the villager spoke up again: "Is there anything else? Throw it all away without holding back. If you want to save your life, don't be stingy with these things!"

At that moment, besides tension and fear, there was also shame and indignation! As soldiers, we had a responsibility to protect these supplies, even at the cost of our own lives. But the reality was that our vehicle was stuck in the snow and we were trapped inside; our ammunition was extremely limited, and if a pack of wolves were summoned, we would be even more helpless.

We looked at each other, hesitated for a moment, and then, without saying anything, reluctantly threw all the meat and a dozen or so packs of biscuits off the truck!

The eight wolves then devoured the meat. After finishing, they tentatively sniffed at the dozen or so packets of biscuits, but didn't eat them.

At this point, I clearly saw that the wolf's belly was now round and full, and its previously ferocious gaze had softened. One of the wolves circled the car twice, while the other seven remained still. A moment later, that wolf led the pack into the woods...

An incredible thing has happened!

A moment later, eight wolves emerged from the pine forest, each carrying a branch in its mouth, and placed them under the two rear wheels of the car. We could hardly believe our eyes! The wolves intended to use the branches to help lift our tires and allow our car to drive out of the snowdrift.

I burst into laughter excitedly...ha...ha..., but after only two laughs, another soldier quickly covered my mouth with his hand, afraid that the sudden laughter would startle the wolves.

Then, all eight wolves crawled under the car, and snow flew up from both sides. Tears welled up in my eyes as I shouted to Xiao Wang, "The wolves are helping us dig through the snow! Start the car quickly!"

The car started, but slipped again after only a couple of steps. The wolf repeated his actions: "First, put branches under the wheels, then dig through the snow..." This was repeated about ten times, with each repetition propelling the car forward a short distance. Finally, on the last attempt, the car successfully traveled over a mile, nearing the mountaintop. Beyond that, it was downhill.

At this moment, eight wolves sat in a line behind the car, one slightly forward of the other seven. The villager said, "The one in front is the alpha wolf; he's the one who comes up with all the ideas." We were extremely excited and clapped for the wolves, waving vigorously at them. But these eight adorable wolves didn't react to our gestures; they simply stared at us for a moment, then, with the alpha wolf leading the way, the rest followed, slowly walking up the mountain and disappearing into the pine forest...

Even fierce wolves know how to repay kindness; shouldn't we reflect on ourselves? As humans who pride ourselves on being the "most intelligent of all beings," shouldn't we live in harmony with other animals on Earth and fill this world with peace and love?

Sometimes, revenge only leads to endless cycles of retribution. We treat even those who aren't truly enemies as adversaries and seek revenge, seemingly only finding pleasure in driving them to their deaths. In reality, every life and every person has a grateful heart. When doing things, why not give others a way out? Perhaps your savior is someone who will save your life!

| Ten types of people to be grateful for in life |

▌I . The Grace of Heaven and Earth

Humans live between heaven and earth, absorbing the essence of nature through food and clothing, enjoying the light of the sun and moon, growing strong and healthy, and living out their lives. We should repay the kindness of heaven and earth by protecting the environment. Taking the sky as our roof and the earth as our mat is not only a sentiment, but also a responsibility.

▌II . The debt of gratitude to parents for raising and nurturing

Ten months of pregnancy, one day of childbirth, meticulous feeding, painstaking efforts, raising a child to adulthood, hoping they will succeed, exhausting all financial and physical resources. A mother worries when her child travels far; their well-being, success, and failure are all on her mind. The great kindness of parents should be repaid throughout one's life. Never be an unfilial child.

▌III . The Gratitude of a Good Teacher for Nurturing Us

From the very beginning of one's education, the role of teachers is immense, sometimes even decisive. Whether studying literature or martial arts, or pursuing any other pursuit-from scholarly pursuits to agriculture, industry, commerce, film, or scientific research-the guidance of a good teacher can benefit one throughout life or determine one's future direction. The kindness of one's teachers should be repaid with the deepest gratitude.

▌IV . The kindness of being helped by benefactors

A talented horse is always present, but a discerning eye is rare. How many talented individuals remain unfulfilled, ultimately ending up as stagnant steeds? In one's life, if one encounters one or two benefactors (superiors, respected figures, powerful individuals, etc.) who appreciate one's abilities and give them opportunities, many years of struggle can be saved. The kindness of such benefactors is forever etched in our hearts.

▌V . The kindness of wise guidance

Life is a journey with many steps, but only a few are truly crucial. From minor setbacks like getting lost, lacking direction in studies, or encountering obstacles in research, to major uncertainties about one's life path, if a wise person (not necessarily someone with higher education, but more often an elder with broader experience) offers guidance at critical moments, sparking new insights, they can either enlighten you, preventing you from getting stuck in a rut, or pull you back from the brink of disaster, thus paving the way for a bright future. Such guidance deserves to be repaid many times over.

▌VI . Kindness for helping in times of crisis

In life, we inevitably encounter bumps and bruises. Unexpected events can happen at any time, and misfortune can strike at any moment. When we encounter emergencies or are in dire straits, friends or strangers step in to help, offering money, effort, or even bloodshed to save us from certain death. Such kindness is immeasurable! In life, we have many friends when things are going well, but once trouble comes, we have even more excuses.

▌VII . The Grace of Green Leaves in Setting Off the Scene

Even a hero needs three helpers, and a beautiful flower needs green leaves to set it off. In one's life, there will be several opportunities to stand alone, and the support and cooperation from parallel organizations and within organizations enable one to successfully manage the situation and achieve brilliance in life. When you become the star, don't forget the kindness of those green leaves around you and behind you who have supported you.

▌8 . The Kindness and Consideration Between Husband and Wife

Husbands and wives are like birds of a feather, supporting each other in times of trouble. Every successful person owes their success to the support and dedication of their spouse. Husbands and wives jointly manage their family, raise children, care for the elderly and nurture the young, sharing both joy and sorrow. Even a day as husband and wife is worth a hundred days of kindness. The bond between husband and wife should not be swallowed up by the materialistic customs of our society.

▌IX . Brotherly Love

Brothers are like hands and feet, sharing the same bloodline and genes from their parents, growing up in the same family, and being the hopes of their parents. They share the same kinship and the same roots. While the destruction of sibling bonds by money, power, and lust is an extremely rare phenomenon, it should serve as a warning. Deep brotherly love and the gratitude owed to one's siblings are paramount.

▌10 . The kindness of true friends

The world is a turbulent place filled with worries. Whether you're a high-ranking official, a farmer in the countryside, or a merchant in the city, everyone faces numerous troubles and carries some unspoken bitterness in their heart. In this vast sea of people, if you have one or more childhood friends, confidants, close friends of different ages who understand you and can share your happiness and pain in time, life is made more wonderful by true friends. Be grateful and cherish them dearly.
